More

The Change Academy Caboolture graduate, Maya Dancey is well and truly making her mark in her career and is taking great strides to close the gap for Indigenous Australians.

I am a proud Bigambul and Yuwaalaraay Aboriginal woman and I wanted to equip myself with the knowledge and skills needed to make a difference, not only in the community but to Indigenous people Australia wide, she said. Its important breakdown the stereotypes associated with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Shortly after graduating from The Change Academy, Maya was accepted into the Indigenous Australian Government Development Programme, which saw her relocated to Canberra to work for the Department of Healths Remote, Indigenous and Multi-Purpose Services Section Residential and Flexible Care Branch. The passionate advocate for Indigenous Australians says that her diploma prepared her for the workforce, which in turn has taught her the importance of proper leadership.

Im learning that I possess the qualities of a leader, she said. Leadership isnt about dictating and control, its about having self-awareness, being impartial and working with people towards a common goal. It is speaking for the voiceless, making the tough decisions and standing up for others, even if it means standing alone.

Mayas significant achievements have also been reflected in the young woman being named a Regional Vocational Student of the Year finalist in the Queensland Training Awards. Shes thrilled with all that she has achieved and encourages others to see the value in education.

I highly encourage everyone, no matter your skills, age or ability, to get involved in every learning and professional development opportunity that arises in your life, said Maya. Knowledge is power. As an Aboriginal woman, I will use my skills as a stepping stone and firm foundation to better help and raise awareness for my people.

My goal is to be a future ambassador for my fellow Indigenous Australians, especially in the public service, Maya continued. There are still many challenges that Indigenous Australians face as a people, and I am determined to leave my mark and will endeavor to do anything I can to aid in closing the gap in all areas. I know now thanks to The Change Academy, that I am more than capable of accomplishing this dream.
